U.S. Highway 101 Closure Near Tumwater

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has shut down U.S. Highway 101 near the Tumwater Truck Route (state Route 117). The closure affects all traffic and is expected to last until Friday, Sept. 26.

“This area presents a challenging worksite,” WSDOT explained. “The work zone has a narrow roadway with steep slopes down to the creek below. WSDOT appreciates travelers’ patience and understanding during this closure.”

To help traffic move, a detour is posted from West Front Street/West First Street to Marine Drive to Tumwater Truck Route. WSDOT confirmed this is the second full closure for the project and emphasized that construction is still on schedule.

New Tolls Coming to SR 509 Expressway

Meanwhile, tolling will begin later this month on the State Route 509 Expressway in SeaTac. Depending on the time of day, drivers will pay between $1.20 and $2.40.

Tolls will be collected near the new Interstate 5 ramps, and there will be no carpool exemptions. Motorists with a Good To Go! Pass holders will pay the lowest rates, while those without one will receive a bill in the mail for $2 more per trip.

The first mile of the SR 509 Expressway opened in June. Another two miles are scheduled to open in 2028, with tolls applying only to the new sections. Existing, previously open routes will remain toll-free.

According to WSDOT, toll revenue will be used to maintain SR 509 and to fund the Puget Sound Gateway Project, which will connect key parts of the state’s freight and highway network. The agency noted that more than $213 million is still needed to support the project.
