We recently asked the Truck Drivers USA Facebook community a simple question:

“What’s something that has made you proud to be a trucker recently?”

The responses came from drivers with every level of experience, from newcomers to retirees with decades behind the wheel. While every story was unique, several themes emerged that continue to define what pride looks like behind the wheel.

Safe Driving Is Still the Greatest Achievement

Many drivers measured success by the miles they traveled without an accident.

Roger Hershberger said his greatest source of pride has been maintaining a perfect safety record over 30 years, while Brookelene Bicksler reflected on retiring after 48 years without “a scratch on anything.”

After four decades and four million safe miles, Al Rivera credited one habit above everything else.

“Never get in a hurry.”

Retired city P&D driver Freddy Ferro shared a similar perspective, saying he finished a 25-year career, including 20 years in pickup and delivery, with nothing more than “a ding on a dumpster.”

Long careers built on safe driving appeared throughout the discussion, showing that many drivers still consider protecting people, equipment and freight to be the accomplishment that matters most.

The Air Horn Still Creates Lasting Memories

One of the most common responses had nothing to do with freight or schedules.

Ron Patton recalled two young boys giving him the arm pump, prompting several blasts from the air horn.

“Not only did they get a charge out of it, but I did too. When you can make somebody’s day, do it; don’t just think about it.”

Joe Clark also said getting to blow the air horn when someone gives the signal remains one of the highlights of the job, while Steven Carpenter and Gisele Drouin Ouellette shared that the smiles those moments create never get old.

Those brief encounters continue to remind drivers that trucking still inspires excitement for many children watching from passing vehicles.

Professional Pride Comes from Doing the Job Well

Some of the strongest responses centered on craftsmanship rather than recognition.

Dean Stout said he enjoys seeing customers surprised by his backing skills, while Lloyd McElmurry takes pride in delivering aggregate loads into difficult locations and being requested by name for future jobs.

“A job well done is its own reward.”

Experience also shapes the way many drivers approach the road. Tina Felan said trucking has taught her patience, respect and the importance of leaving plenty of space, lessons that extend beyond work and into everyday driving.

The Work Means More Than the Miles

Several drivers pointed to the people who benefit from the work they do every day.

Jose Luis Arencibia said watching his wife and child enjoy a comfortable home, good meals and security makes every mile worthwhile.

Adam May shared that realizing he has helped feed hundreds of thousands of people across the country gives him a lasting sense of purpose, while Bryan Adamiak said knowing he has done his part to keep America moving continues to make him proud.

Former driver Christina Espinoza reflected on safely delivering freight, helping keep stores stocked and contributing to communities across the country, saying those responsibilities always gave her a strong sense of purpose.

A Career Worth Looking Back On

Many retired drivers said the profession remains one of the greatest accomplishments of their lives.

Daniel Parks Sr. said he would not trade his 45-year career for anything because of the places he visited and the people he met.

After starting in 1977 and retiring in 2023, Jim Simmons reflected on the sacrifices truck drivers make to keep freight moving despite often receiving little recognition. When asked whether he would choose the profession again, his answer was immediate.

“Hell YEAH!”

Richard Wilkerson said he loved every mile of his 64-year trucking career, while Howard Hammond shared that he still enjoys hearing compliments about his truck while continuing to work at 77 years old. Mick Hough also expressed pride in remaining behind the wheel at 82.

Pride Takes Many Forms

Not every driver defined pride the same way, but the responses shared a common thread. Some found satisfaction in mastering difficult skills. Others valued the relationships built over decades, the ability to support their families, or simply the opportunity to continue doing work they genuinely enjoy.

Taken together, the responses show that pride in trucking isn’t measured only by miles or years behind the wheel. It’s built through safe decisions, professional skill, meaningful work, and the countless moments that remind drivers why they chose the profession in the first place.

Those achievements helped four professional drivers earn a place in the National Private Truck Council’s Driver Hall of Fame during the organization’s Annual Education Management Conference and Exhibition held May 9-11 in Orlando, Florida.

The Hall of Fame, sponsored by International Motors and Centerline Drivers, recognizes private fleet drivers who have demonstrated exceptional safety and professionalism throughout their careers. To qualify, drivers must meet demanding standards that include at least 20 years of driving experience along with either 3 million miles or 50,000 hours of safe driving without a preventable accident.

Since the program began in 1987, only 160 drivers have earned induction into the Hall of Fame. This year’s class adds four more names to that list.

Four Careers Built on Safety

The 2026 inductees represent different companies, freight types, and career paths, but they share one thing in common: decades of safe driving performance.

Robert Baity of Unifi Manufacturing began driving on his family’s North Carolina farm in 1976, hauling crops such as corn, soybeans, and hay. Over a career spanning more than 48 years, he accumulated 3.6 million miles without a chargeable accident, injury, or moving violation. Today, he continues hauling general freight in and out of Unifi’s Yadkinville, North Carolina terminal.

Matthew Dosland, assigned to John Deere through CPC Logistics, built his career moving equipment parts throughout the Midwest. His 30 years behind the wheel include operating through snow, ice, severe storms, and other challenging conditions while maintaining more than 3.25 million safe miles. During his time with CPC Logistics, he earned multiple safe-driving awards and was named an NPTC National All-Star Driver in 2018.

Eddie McAllister of Shaw Industries Group began his transportation career as a yard spotter before earning his CDL and moving into a driving position. Over 39 years, he accumulated 4.2 million miles without an accident, injury, or moving violation while hauling everything from tankers to flooring products. His work regularly involves physically demanding deliveries that require unloading freight with forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment.

Paul Ramirez of Circle K/Fuel South Express started his professional driving career while serving in the U.S. Army. Over the next 35 years, he built a record of 3.5 million safe miles while hauling fuel products across Midwest routes. His work transporting gasoline, diesel, and ethanol blends requires operating in all types of weather while handling freight that demands strict attention to safety procedures.

Recognition That Goes Beyond Mileage

Million-mile achievements often grab attention, but Hall of Fame recognition requires more than simply spending time on the road.

The program recognizes drivers who have maintained an exceptional level of safety and professionalism over decades of service. In an industry where road conditions, traffic, weather, and schedules create daily challenges, maintaining a spotless record over millions of miles represents a level of consistency few drivers achieve.

This year’s inductees hauled different types of freight, worked for different companies, and followed different career paths. What connects them is a commitment to safe driving that lasted throughout their careers.

Their induction into the NPTC Driver Hall of Fame serves as recognition not only of the miles they accumulated, but of how they accumulated them.

What America’s Road Team Represents

Founded in 1986 and sponsored by Volvo Trucks North America, America’s Road Team brings together professional truck drivers with superior safety records to represent the industry at events, schools, and meetings with policymakers. Captains dedicate a few days each month to share their knowledge of safe driving, the importance of trucking, and industry best practices.

This year’s 31 finalists, representing 19 states, have a combined total of 57 million safe-driving miles and 737 years of professional driving experience. They drive everything from short-haul deliveries to long-haul routes across all 48 continental states. Their goal is to continue raising awareness about highway safety, professionalism, and the essential role trucking plays in the U.S. economy.

Final Selection Process

The finalists will compete for the final team in January at ATA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Judges from various sectors of the trucking industry will evaluate candidates based on safety records, communication skills, industry knowledge, and dedication to promoting trucking to the public.

The new America’s Road Team captains will receive the signature navy blue blazers and begin outreach work with media, public officials, business and community groups, and their fellow drivers nationwide. The TCA Fleet Safety Awards are officially open for entries, inviting carriers of all sizes to show how their teams go above and beyond to maintain exceptional safety records and strong safety cultures.

The TCA Fleet Safety Awards is a program that recognizes fleets with superior safety records and exceptional company safety cultures, the association said. “If your safety team has raised the bar, now is the time to get them the recognition they’ve earned all year long.”

This annual competition is open to all TCA carrier members. Awards are given for first, second, and third place across six mileage-based divisions, ensuring fleets are judged fairly against others running similar miles. Winners from each division will then compete for the Grand Prize in both Large and Small Carrier categories, a top honor in the industry that highlights a company’s commitment to driver safety and operational excellence.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1978 to 1984, Carter started his post-military career working at a box plant for furniture. He quickly realized that factory work was not for him.

“I got tired of looking at four walls all of the time,” Carter said.

The solution was to carry on a family legacy.

“My dad was a truck driver, and he suggested that I give it a shot,” Carter said.

The first step was to go to trucking school, he said, adding that he was trained at Isothermal Community College in Forest City, North Carolina, which was affiliated with New Jersey-based Coretta Trucking.

“They had a satellite terminal right across the street from the terminal, and that’s where my dad worked, at Coretta Trucking,” Carter said.

Once he completed training, he drove the team with his dad for about eight months, allowing the two to spend time together while Carter gained real-world experience.

“Then Dad had to do something else — and my wife didn’t like for me to be gone three weeks out of the month,” he said. The search was on for a job that would allow him to drive and still spend quality time with his family.

“Sometimes you’ve got to get a little experience so you can move on to something else,” Carter said. “I had to find my way until I found the right trucking company for me, which was Cargo Transporters.”

Twenty-four years later, he’s still driving for the same company — and working to make the trucking industry better.

“I’m out for a week. I’m home every weekend,” he said. “I can count on one hand the times I’ve been out on a weekend. That’s good. Not a lot of companies try to make that a priority.”

Carter counts being able to see new places and travel around the country as his favorite part of being a trucker.

“It’s never the same scenery. That’s what I like about it,” he explained. “You get to meet all kinds of people from all over the country. I always say I have an office with a view.

“If you’re not learning something every day in truck driving, there’s something wrong,” he continued.

Of the many challenges faced by professional drivers, Carter says a shortage of safe truck parking and traffic congestion are the ones that affect him the most, particularly in larger metropolitan areas.

“If I take my time in the big cities and just mind the space around my truck, before you know it — 10, 15 minutes, maybe 20 minutes — I’m through it without any kind of hassle,” he said of urban traffic.

“But you’re always keeping your head on a swivel around you with the traffic around the big trucks. It’s just that the general public doesn’t realize what it takes for a truck to maneuver in traffic,” he continued. “They’re trying to get from Point A to Point B, just like we are, and they don’t want to be behind the truck. That’s why they’re always zooming around.”

A consummate professional both on and off the road, Carter has been recognized with several accolades, including being named a 2025 Professional Driver of the Year by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), a 2024-2025 Road Team for the American Trucking Associations (ATA), and Cargo Transporters’ November 2024 Driver of the Month.

Most recently, Carter was honored as the 2025 DMC Insurance Driver of the Year. He is the only Cargo Transport driver to win both the TCA and DMC awards.

“Perry exemplifies what it means to be a professional driver, a servant leader, and an industry ambassador,” said Matthew Sheffield, marketing and public relations coordinator at Cargo Transporters. “He has the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and community service, and is a powerful voice for veteran causes and a dedicated advocate within the trucking community.”

According to TCA, with 2.8 million accident-free miles and decades of experience, Carter sets the standard for safety, humility, and service.

Carter is humble when speaking about all that he has achieved in his career, but all the same, he is very aware of the honors he’s earned, particularly the TCA driver of the year award and being named a captain for ATA’s road team.

“I was driving through Tennessee one morning and listening to the Dave Nemo Show, and they announced my name over the radio,” he recalled. “I thought, ‘Man, that was awesome!’” Carter said.

For Carter, earning all the accolades he has received has been both exciting and overwhelming. He credits his family, mentors, and his faith in helping him achieve his dreams. Outside of work, Carter enjoys taking his wife Carolyn out to dinner and playing golf.

“Perry is deeply committed to supporting fellow veterans through efforts like Wreaths Across America and organizations such as Purple Heart Homes and American Warriors of Liberty,” a statement from TCA reads.

“He proudly represented Cargo Transporters as a Ride of Pride driver in both 2018 and 2023. Beyond his professional achievements, Perry also demonstrates remarkable devotion to his family,” the statement continues. “He has rearranged his work schedule to be there for his wife, Carolyn, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and cares for his disabled brother who lives with them.”

Through his service, advocacy, and compassion, Perry Carter continues to inspire others.

Inside, it’s outfitted with a mobile classroom and a simulator designed to give people a deeper look at what driving a truck is really like.

During their time as captains, drivers attend school visits, community events, policy meetings, and industry gatherings to talk about trucking’s impact on daily life and the economy.

Application Details

ATA will select the 2026–2027 captains following in-person evaluations in Washington, D.C., scheduled for January 18–24, 2026.

A panel of industry leaders will review each applicant based on their safety history, communicati.on skills, and industry insight — all key to representing trucking in public spaces.

Drivers interested in applying should go through their carrier. Application materials and eligibility info are available now on ATA’s website.

The most recent team, chosen in early 2024, includes drivers from 14 carriers and together, they’ve logged over 61 million accident-free miles. That group will keep traveling and sharing their experiences through 2025, as the next round of applications gets underway.

“America’s Road Team captains are the face of our industry,” said Nikki Thomas, ATA’s vice president of industry affairs. “They exemplify the best of what trucking has to offer and play a vital role in shifting public perception and inspiring future drivers.”
