A June 17 letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that a ball stud in the tie rod or drag link could break.

The recall involves Kenworth models K270, K370, T280, T380, T480, T680, T880, W900, and W990, along with Peterbilt models 220, 536, 537, 548, 567, 579, and 589, all under the Paccar brand.

The issue was reported to Paccar by a supplier in late May. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities, as stated in the recall report.

Truck drivers are advised not to operate these vehicles until the necessary repairs are made, due to the potential for “complete loss of steering control,” which heightens the risk of accidents, according to NHTSA.

Dealers will inspect and replace the tie rod and drag link assemblies at no cost to the owners, NHTSA confirmed.

According to a recent government report, a significant number of Wabash trailers with rail-style lift gates may be defective. In fact, an estimated nine out of every ten trailers failed to meet a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

The recall specifically affects Wabash dry van trailers with model years ranging from 2009 to 2024. If your trailer falls into this category, take note of the following models: DVDBHPC, DVCVHPC, DVHDHPC, DVLSHPC, DVCVRCP, DVXDHPC, RFALHSA, RFCVHSC, DVLHHSA, DVCVHSA, and DVDBHSA.

The safety issue arises from a rail-style lift gate with a rear guard that is positioned too far forward. This configuration reduces impact protection, putting you at an increased risk of injury.

“The addition of a rail style lift gate was not taken into account when calculating the rear most extremity of the vehicle,” the recall report said.

In order to comply with FMVSS no. 224, the rear impact guard will be upgraded with an extension to the horizontal member. This extension brings the guard in line with the 305mm maximum setback requirement.

Dealers will add the extension for free of charge. Owners should keep an eye on their mail in late November for a notification regarding this recall.

In February 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a final rule on adaptive driving beam technology. This technology aims to enhance driving visibility and reduce accidents on the road.

Mack’s Product Safety Working Group has recently identified a potential non-compliance issue related to certain chassis extensions and hood variations. In response, the company is taking proactive measures to rectify the situation and ensure the safety of their customers.

To address this concern, dealerships are offering a free and hassle-free solution. They will be adding additional turn signal lighting to the affected vehicles, ensuring compliance with the new regulations. This means that owners of the impacted vehicles can have peace of mind knowing that their safety is a top priority.

The decision to replace the batteries was prompted by a recent incident of a battery fire at Volvo’s assembly plant in Virginia, as reported by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Fortunately, the fire was contained within the battery and did not spread further.

Ensuring the safety of their customers is a top priority for Volvo AB, which is why they have taken swift action to rectify this potential risk.

The trucks have battery packs supplied by Akasol AG, and the problem is limited to a specific plant in the U.S. The batteries have technical issues with power distribution that may result in debris getting inside the pack, which can potentially cause a short circuit and increase the likelihood of a fire.

“The third-generation version of the batteries Akasol have delivered may catch fire,” said Claes Eliasson, a Volvo spokesperson.

The growing use of battery packs in transportation is drawing increased attention to the risk of fires. Although combustion-engine vehicles are just as susceptible to catching fire as electric vehicles, extinguishing battery fires is more challenging due to self-oxidizing lithium salts that can cause them to reignite. In fact, extinguishing a battery fire requires thousands of gallons of water, far more than what is needed to stop a fire in a gasoline car.

In a recent incident, Nikola Corp. attributed a fire that affected multiple big rigs at its Phoenix headquarters to foul play. Meanwhile, the cause of a recent blaze on a containership carrying thousands of cars, including electric vehicles, is still under investigation.

This is the second recall for Tesla’s electric tractor. The first took place in March and concerns an electronic parking brake valve module (PVM) that may lead to a rollaway and/or crash. The company recalled 35 affected units at the time.

“In addition, the door closure warning system allows the operator to dismiss the notification that the side door is unlatched, which could result in driving with an unsecured door. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 206, ‘Door Locks and Door Retention Components,'” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall notice.

Tesla Semi now has a door closure warning system specifically for its independently operated rear-hinged side doors. If the system detects that the door is not fully latched and the parking brake is not engaged, it will notify the operator through the vehicle’s touchscreen.

This update is available on a subset of affected vehicles running software version 2023.12 or higher, and can be dismissed by the operator. Tesla has issued an over-the-air software update to fix any issues. Owner notification letters will be sent out starting August 11th.

PepsiCo received the first production Semis on December 1st, 2022.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, confirmed during his keynote speech at the Edison Electric Institute conference in Texas that the volume production of Tesla’s Class 8 tractor is planned to begin towards the end of 2023. In 2024, Tesla aims to produce up to 50,000 electric Semi trucks.

The remedy is a simple software update that disables the blink code function, which interferes with the ABS indicator lamp signal broadcast over the Controller Area Network and causes the ABS indicator lamp to turn off.
