The new corridor extends along I-480 from the Lorain County line to State Route 176, where nearly 800 crashes resulting in nine fatalities have been recorded over the past two years. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), speeding and failure to wear seat belts remain two of the leading factors in those crashes.

Increased Enforcement Begins on I-480

Motorists traveling through the new safety corridor should expect increased patrols from the OSHP and local law enforcement agencies. Officials said the corridor will operate under a zero-tolerance enforcement approach for speeding and seat belt violations.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has installed new signs throughout the corridor to notify drivers about the increased enforcement. Two electronic signs will also display the number of days since the last serious crash to increase public awareness of roadway safety.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said the previous I-90 corridor demonstrated that targeted enforcement can reduce serious crashes and expressed confidence that similar results can be achieved on I-480.

I-90 Corridor Reported Fewer Serious Crashes

State officials credited the original I-90 Safety Corridor with reducing crashes over the past two years.

Between July 2024 and July 2026, troopers issued 974 speeding citations and 524 seat belt citations along the eight-mile section of I-90 between East 55th Street and East 260th Street.

Compared to the previous two-year period, officials reported:

• A 38 percent reduction in fatal crashes.
• A 32 percent reduction in serious injury crashes.
• A 23 percent reduction in total crashes.

ODOT District 12 Deputy Director John Picuri said the program’s success showed that targeted enforcement and public education can reduce crashes while encouraging safer driving habits.

Seat Belt Use and Speeding Continue to Be a Focus

Ohio law requires all drivers and front seat passengers to wear seat belts. According to the OSHP, nearly 48 percent of statewide fatal crashes between 2022 and 2025 involved an unbelted occupant.

Speeding also remains a significant concern across the state. From 2021 through 2025, the OSHP issued more than 410,000 citations for drivers traveling at least 20 mph over the posted speed limit, including more than 19,000 citations for speeds of 100 mph or greater.

Officials also noted that Cuyahoga County continues to record more speed-related crashes than any other county in Ohio.

Lt. Timothy Hoffman of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the goal of the safety corridor program is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors through a combination of enforcement and public awareness, ultimately improving safety for everyone traveling Ohio’s highways.

A collaborative effort between the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) and the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (OTIC) is in place to address the frequent causes behind both passenger and commercial vehicle collisions.

“The motoring public can expect to see troopers conducting high-visibility patrols on the turnpike through the rest of 2025, focusing on distracted driving, speed enforcement and safety belt usage,” said Lt. Erica Gockstetter. “But we cannot just enforce our way to a safer Ohio Turnpike. To truly create the safest driving environment, we need a commitment from motorists to drive in ways that are responsible and safe.”

Lt. Gockstetter highlighted the importance of safe driving practices for all types of motorists, especially in how passenger vehicles share the road with commercial trucks.

“We want to remind the motoring public to use caution around commercial vehicles. Avoid the no-zone by staying out of the blind areas in the front, back and sides of these vehicles. Do not cut in front of a commercial vehicle, as they require more stopping distance than a passenger vehicle,” she advised. “We equally ask commercial drivers to drive alert, follow the hours-of-service regulations, and be attentive to blind spots when changing lanes. Additionally, driving appropriately for road or weather conditions is crucial.”

Alarming Turnpike Safety Statistics Drive Action

The safety campaign comes on the heels of sobering data from the Ohio Turnpike. Between 2020 and 2024, there were 3,810 crashes caused by speeding, resulting in 18 fatalities and 1,514 injuries. Additionally, 326 accidents involved distractions, resulting in one death and 141 injuries, while 29 fatalities were recorded where safety belts were available but not used.

To address these troubling numbers, OSHP and OTIC are urging drivers to reflect on their habits behind the wheel.
