Lighting Malfunctions on Volvo and Mack Trucks

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling more than 2,000 VN trucks from the 2025 and 2026 model years after uncovering a fault in the trailer body control system. The defect, traced to an improperly manufactured body control module, can cause trailer lights to stop working when the truck is towing.

Drivers may notice the issue if their dashboard displays a pop-up warning that communication has been lost with the trailer body input and output module. If the trailer’s tail lights or turn signals fail, surrounding motorists may not see the truck braking, stopping, or changing lanes, which raises the risk of collisions.

The same lighting issue may also affect more than 150 Mack Pioneer trucks built for model years 2025 and 2026. Volvo reported 28 field cases and 204 warranty claims connected to 176 trucks, though there have been no confirmed crashes or injuries tied to the defect.

Both Mack and Volvo dealers will replace the trailer body input and output module free of charge. Owners will begin receiving official notifications by mail on November 17, 2025.

Door Latch Recall on Volvo VN Trucks

In a separate action, Volvo Trucks has also identified a potential hazard with interior door latches. Over 4,000 VN trucks from the 2026 model year are being recalled because an incorrectly installed latch cable on the interior handle could keep the door from opening.

A jammed latch poses the risk of trapping occupants inside the cab, creating a safety hazard in emergencies. So far, Volvo has received 17 field reports, but no incidents or injuries. The company estimates that less than half a percent of the affected vehicles are actually defective.

Dealers will repair the issue at no cost, replacing both the latch cable and the pivot clip. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by mail beginning November 17, 2025.

Drivers operating affected Volvo or Mack trucks are urged to pay close attention to their recall notifications and schedule service as soon as possible once letters arrive. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects nearly 2,500 Volvo VN trucks from model years 2025–26, along with several dozen 2025 Mack Anthems and 2025–26 Mack Pioneers.

At the center of the recall is a problem with the dynamic steering and oversteer guidance feature. The system, designed to help stabilize steering, may malfunction. If the guidance corrects an oversteer input, it could continue pulling the wheel in the opposite direction instead of stopping once balance is restored.

This malfunction raises a serious risk: if the driver doesn’t immediately counteract the steering, control of the truck could be lost. There are currently no warning indicators to alert drivers if their truck has the defect.

Both manufacturers identified the issue in July and launched an investigation. So far, there’s been only one field report related to the defect, and no accidents, injuries, or warranty claims have been tied to the problem.

As of August 11, the recommended fix is to disable the oversteer guidance feature. Volvo and Mack are addressing this through over-the-air software updates. In addition, the feature has already been removed from all new truck orders going forward.

Owners of affected trucks will begin receiving official recall notices on October 5. Both manufacturers also have reimbursement programs in place to cover repairs that may have been completed before the recall was issued.
