The Georgia Department of Transportation opened the connector to port traffic on July 15, completing a $130 million project that links Garden City Terminal’s Gate 3 directly with the interstate system. The new roadway also removes the need for trucks to cross at-grade rail crossings, which previously slowed traffic on surrounding roads.

For truck drivers hauling freight to and from one of the nation’s busiest container ports, the new connection is expected to reduce delays while moving more commercial traffic away from nearby neighborhoods.

The Brampton Road Connector is one of several transportation projects underway around Savannah as freight volumes continue to grow.

GDOT is also rebuilding the Interstate 16 and Interstate 95 interchange through a $295 million project designed to improve traffic flow and safety for both freight and passenger traffic using the corridor.

Another major investment is planned along Interstate 16, where the state recently awarded a $468.35 million contract to widen approximately 18 miles between Interstate 95 and State Route 67. The project will expand the highway from two lanes to three in each direction while replacing six bridges and widening six others.

Together, the projects are intended to improve freight access to the Port of Savannah, one of the country’s largest container gateways, while creating a more efficient route for commercial traffic traveling through coastal Georgia.

Proposed Truck Parking Projects

The two projects include:

Monroe County Weigh Station (Northbound): GDOT plans to add 23 truck parking spaces at an estimated cost of $4 million. Construction is expected to begin this fall.
Rest Area 22 (Southbound): The project would add 36 truck parking spaces with an estimated cost of $2 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in early summer 2027.

According to GDOT, each project is expected to take about 12 months to complete.

Drivers and other members of the public can submit comments on the proposed projects until August 15.

Interstate 285’s northern segment is one of the busiest highways in the U.S., plagued by heavy traffic and frequent congestion. In response, GDOT plans to add two barrier-separated express lanes in both directions on I-285 in Cobb, Fulton, and DeKalb counties. This initiative aims to enhance mobility, offer more reliable travel times, and improve transit operations.

The express lanes will extend between South Atlanta Road and Henderson Road on I-285, and along state Route 400 from south of the Glenridge Connector to near the North Springs Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Station. These optional lanes will employ market-based pricing that adjusts in real-time to reflect traffic conditions, and a Peach Pass will be necessary for usage.

Updated concept layouts, design features, environmental impact findings, and a proposed mitigation plan will be available at the four public meetings, where officials will be present to answer questions. However, no formal presentations are scheduled. The public hearing schedule is as follows:

• Doraville: 4 to 7 p.m. on July 8 at Spring Hall Event Center
• Smyrna: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 10 at Campbell Middle School
• Dunwoody: 4 to 7 p.m. on July 16 at Dunwoody City Hall
• Sandy Springs: 4 to 7 p.m. on July 18 at City Springs

There will also be virtual sessions for those unable to attend in person:

• July 9: 5 to 7 p.m.
• July 17: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The virtual events will feature presentations from the project team and a Q&A session, with recordings available online after the sessions.
