TA recently shared that their annual charity golf event in August was their best yet, bringing in almost $200,000. These funds will be shared equally between SCF and TAT. SCF, which helps drivers who can’t work due to illness or injury, will also receive an extra $89,000 from a Round-Up campaign that took place in June and July at TA, Petro, and TA Express locations.

Esther Goetsch, Executive Director of TAT, also expressed her appreciation: “This support is crucial in our fight against human trafficking. Truck stops play a big role in keeping communities safe, and TA’s actions are making a difference.” In addition to raising funds, TA also works to spread awareness by training their staff every year and posting helpful information in their restrooms for anyone who might need it. TA has become a key partner in tackling this serious issue.

“The trucking industry doesn’t get pulled into the limelight very often for the good they do,” Karkula said. “They are very viable to our organization. Truckers have hearts of gold, and I want others to see that. They love Special Olympics and help us throughout the year.”

The Special Olympics Minnesota convoy traveled a 30-mile route from Columbus to Harris.

The event also included a fun-filled cookout and a performance by Nashville country artist Jack Kapanka, who will enchant us with his rendition of “America Moves by Truck.”

“It’s a lot of work, but anything we ask of truckers, law enforcement and sponsors, they find a way to make it happen,” Karkula said. “We do this event with the help of a lot of good people. They keep a smile on my face at all times. It’s way more than just a special event.”

Some powerful team effort was shown this year during the meal service. The heartwarming story starts with one of the Special Olympics athletes, who happens to be employed at a local Hy-Vee grocery store. Through their resourcefulness, they successfully orchestrated a generous food donation. In addition, a group of dedicated truckers stepped up and provided grills to cook this bountiful feast. This gesture exemplifies the unwavering dedication and selflessness displayed by these incredible convoy volunteers.

“I need to thank the entire trucking industry, law enforcement and athletes that attend each year,” Karkula said. “We need them all, and they all make it happen. I never forget who we’re doing it for and why we’re doing it. I’d do it on a volunteer basis, because that’s how much I care.”

To further demonstrate their commitment to drivers, Love’s made its first $100,000 donation to St Christopher in April of 2020 to assist drivers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funds raised through this campaign play a vital role in supporting various programs offered by the Veterans Community Project. One such program is the monthly commissary day, which takes place on the last Wednesday of each month.

During the commissary day, veterans with valid identification can access essential items like food, clothing, toiletries, and more – all at no cost. Additionally, on these days, lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Recently, members of the Truckers for Troops committee had the opportunity to visit the Veterans Community Project during the June commissary day. Witnessing the profound impact of a service like this firsthand left a lasting impression on them.

With their unwavering support, Truckers for Troops truly uplifts and assists veterans in Kansas City.

“We came up with the concept of commissary because we saw a big need for that resource,” Dylan Chevalier, veteran engagement manager at Veterans Community Project Kansas City, said. “The finds we get from various agencies, such as Truckers for Troops, go towards commissary days to restock the shelves or replenish the miscellaneous items, the hygiene products, just everything we need to provide for veterans for the month. We try to accommodate every need a veteran is facing. We want to show them we’re here for them.”

Local veteran and former truck driver, Frank Smith was one of the shoppers who attended the exciting June commissary event.

“I can’t say enough good things about VCP,” Smith said. “They’ve helped me immensely. Not just the food from the commissary, but I’ve got two counselors here to help me find a job and deal with some anxiety. If you have a family at home the first thing they (VCP) say is how many in the household? They’re doing everything they can to help us out.”

Truckers for Troops, established in 2007, has generously donated almost $800,000 to support veterans and veteran organizations. In 2022, OOIDA’s military fundraising efforts resulted in a $15,000 donation to the Veterans Community Project in Kansas City, Missouri.

This year, the Truckers for Troops campaign will take place from November 6th to November 12th. As part of OOIDA’s 50-year anniversary special, you can join with a two-year membership for only $50 or get a discounted price of $35 for one year. It’s worth noting that 10% of your membership dues will be contributed to the Truckers for Troops fund, and OOIDA will match that 10%.

Virginia Task Force-1 is a highly skilled and versatile emergency response team made up of experts in emergency management, medicine, and specialized fields such as structural engineering, hazardous materials, and canine search. They are based in Fairfax, Virginia and are supported by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

The team’s impressive capabilities have been recognized by both the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. As a result, they are involved in search and rescue efforts regionally and globally, contributing to relief efforts in times of crisis.

The team at Virginia Task Foce-1 is grateful of the donation, stating that while their missions are funded through their partnerships, the TCF contribution “is greatly appreciated and will be immediately used for acquisitions to increase effectiveness. Supplemental funding allows for equipment flexibility that otherwise we would not have.”

“When disasters strike, trucks filled with water, food and fuel are often among the first things people see as they begin picking up the pieces,” said American Trucking Associations President and CEO Chris Spear, vice chairman of the Trucking Cares Foundation. “But our work can’t begin until groups like Virginia Task Force 1 get on the ground and begin rescue and recovery efforts. The Patterson High School Truck Driving Program already prepares students for the Commercial Learner’s Permit and meets the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Entry Level Driver Training theory standards. With the addition of the new course, students will have access to state-of-the-art Advanced Training Systems simulators and a pair of Fatal Vision goggles to simulate the effects of alcohol impairment.

The program’s coordinator and instructor, Dave Dein, is excited to offer students an interactive, hands-on approach to safe driving education.

“It is so important to give students an experience to emphasize the dangers of distracted/impaired driving rather than just telling them not to do it,” said Dein. To make the lesson meaningful rather than just a fun activity, at the conclusion of the driving course the students read personal stories of people who were impacted by distracted or impaired driving in order to put faces behind the staggering statistics, said Dein.

Dein is also the co-founder of Next Generation in Trucking Association, a nonprofit that aims to spread awareness about the trucking industry among young people. Their mission is to provide free education to high school students and help them replicate the successful Patterson program. With NGT’s assistance, more than 150 schools across the country have initiated CDL programs for their students.
