In a recent release, Peterbilt confirmed that this engine complies with CARB Omnibus Regulation standards. To achieve this, the engine has undergone extensive redesigns, particularly in its internal hardware and aftertreatment systems, to significantly lower NOx emissions.

“The larger volume aftertreatment system includes an innovative compact twin assembly featuring a 48-volt generator located in the flywheel housing, and an electrical heater located in the inlet to provide lower NOx output,” the news release states. “The internal hardware now features a larger volume mixer, longer selective catalytic converter (SCR) and an improved and more durable NOx sensor design with increased longevity for improved uptime. These features allow Peterbilt customers to achieve increased engine efficiency and fuel economy while continuing to meet stringent CARB emissions regulation.”

The CARB-compliant PACCAR MX-13 engine merges a diesel powertrain with sophisticated technology. Its flat torque curve offers enhanced performance across a wider RPM range, improving both drivability and fuel efficiency. The engine is available in a high-performance variant, delivering 510 horsepower and 1,850 pound-feet of torque, as well as an efficiency-centric option with 455 horsepower and 1,650 pound-feet of torque, optimal between 900 and 1,325 RPM.

“PACCAR MX engines are designed to provide reliability and fuel efficiency in a quiet, comfortable, and powerful package. The new CARB low NOx PACCAR MX-13 engine incorporates all these benefits while also reducing the carbon footprint for our customers,” said Scott Newhouse, Peterbilt’s chief engineer.

CARB’s subsequent compliance deadline is anticipated in July, wherein owners will be obligated to report the outcomes of a smog check, ensuring that their vehicles’ emissions control systems are functioning correctly or have undergone necessary repairs.

To achieve compliance with the CTC for 2023, owners must report pertinent information about both themselves and their vehicles, remit annual compliance fees, and fulfill periodic testing requirements by the revised deadline of Jan. 31, 2024.

CARB specifies that these reporting requirements are applicable to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeding 14,000 pounds and powered by either diesel or alternative fuel. This includes both in-state and out-of-state vehicles operating within California, encompassing public vehicles (federal, state, and local); motorcoaches; transit, shuttle, and school buses; personal vehicles; California-registered motorhomes; single-vehicle fleets; and vehicles registered outside California (excluding motorhomes).
