The project brings zero-tailpipe-emission Volvo VNR Electric trucks into daily food rescue operations, helping reduce diesel pollution and noise in some of the most heavily trafficked freight neighborhoods in the South Bronx while supporting one of the city’s largest hunger-relief organizations.

Electric trucks added to essential food rescue work

City Harvest will use the Volvo VNR Electric trucks to collect excess food from grocers, farms, manufacturers, and restaurants and deliver it to food pantries, soup kitchens, and Mobile Markets throughout all five boroughs of New York City.

Volvo Trucks North America said the deployment aligns electric vehicle technology with essential, high-frequency urban delivery routes where environmental and community impacts are most visible.

“City Harvest rescues and delivers millions of pounds of food to New Yorkers every year. We are proud that these new electric trucks will support that crucial mission with cleaner, quieter operations,” said Keith Brandis, head of policy & regulatory affairs, North America, Volvo Group’s trucks technology & industrial division. “The Bronx is Breathing initiative shows how targeted infrastructure investment and community partnerships can accelerate the adoption of electric trucks in dense urban freight environments.”

Funding and infrastructure supporting the rollout

The Bronx Is Breathing initiative is backed by a $10 million award from the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program. The funding is intended to reduce emissions and noise in South Bronx neighborhoods that border one of the busiest freight corridors in the country.

Each Volvo VNR Electric truck will be equipped with battery-electric transport refrigeration units, allowing food pickups and deliveries to operate with zero tailpipe emissions from both the truck and the refrigeration system.

Initially, City Harvest will charge the vehicles at a new charging installation at the Fulton Fish Market Cooperative within the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. Over time, charging operations will transition to a large public freight-focused charging hub being developed by MN8 Energy at Hunts Point.

When operational in 2029, that facility will include 32 DC fast chargers, with stalls designed for heavy-duty Class 8 trucks, along with 10 Level-2 chargers.

Why the Volvo VNR Electric fits urban freight routes

Volvo said the VNR Electric is designed specifically for city operations where trucks regularly operate near residential areas, schools, and businesses.

“The Volvo VNR Electric truck is purpose-built for urban routes where trucks operate near homes, schools, and businesses,” Volvo said. “With zero-tailpipe emissions, the VNR Electric helps improve local air quality in densely populated communities long impacted by transportation-related pollution. Its quieter operation also reduces noise during early-morning or late-night deliveries, creating a more comfortable environment for drivers and city residents.”

For drivers, quieter operation and reduced vibration can also improve comfort during stop-and-go urban work.

Community and environmental impact in Hunts Point

The Hunts Point peninsula is home to the nation’s largest wholesale food hub and sees more than 15,000 truck trips each workday. Communities surrounding the area experience some of the highest asthma hospitalization rates in the country, largely linked to diesel traffic.

Bronx Is Breathing combines electric truck deployment with charging infrastructure development to demonstrate a scalable model for reducing freight-related emissions in dense urban areas.

“NYSERDA’s support of the Bronx is Breathing project will help City Harvest transition from diesel to zero-emission delivery trucks, reducing noise and improving air quality for South Bronx residents,” said David Sandbank, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority senior vice president of integrated energy solutions. “These investments in electric trucks and charging infrastructure support cleaner freight operations in Hunts Point and strengthen the local economy.”

City Harvest’s role and scale of operations

City Harvest operates a large fleet supporting daily food rescue across New York City. The organization rescues and delivers more than 86 million pounds of food each year, averaging approximately 250,000 pounds per day.

The new electric trucks are part of a broader eight-vehicle Volvo Group deployment funded through the project, supporting food distribution, waste operations, and local deliveries within Hunts Point.

“City Harvest’s food rescue model will prevent more than 25 million kilograms of carbon emissions this year, all while providing food to our neighbors in need,” said Jilly Stephens, CEO of City Harvest. “We operate in every corner of New York City, often in communities that experience the highest levels of truck traffic. Electric trucks will help us reduce our environmental footprint while we continue to provide millions of pounds of food to New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity.”

Dealer support for electric truck uptime

All Volvo VNR Electric trucks deployed through the Bronx Is Breathing project will be supported by Milea Truck Sales and Leasing. The Bronx-based dealership was the first on the East Coast to achieve Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealership status.

Milea Truck Sales and Leasing has invested in dedicated EV service bays, charging infrastructure, and parts inventory, with sales and service teams completing specialized training to support fleets transitioning to battery-electric trucks.

A model for future urban freight projects

The Bronx Is Breathing initiative is supported by the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program, administered by NYSERDA in partnership with the New York State Department of Public Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Make A Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley confirmed that the 2026 convoy will take place on Saturday, May 9, beginning at Manheim, PA Auto Auction. While the starting location remains the same, the route has been adjusted to improve safety for participants and surrounding communities while reducing traffic disruption.

The fundraising goal for this year’s convoy is $575,000.

Convoy departure details and route overview

The convoy will depart Manheim, PA, Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. Trucks will enter Route 283 West at Mount Joy Road and travel in the right lane at a reduced speed with hazard lights activated. This approach allows other vehicles to merge and exit safely along the route.

From there, trucks will:

• Exit Route 283 West at Toll House Road
• Turn left and re-enter Route 283 East
• Continue to the Esbenshade Road exit

Only drivers transporting wish children will return to Manheim, PA, Auto Auction following the loop.

The updated route covers approximately 33 miles through Lancaster and Dauphin counties, not including the return segment for select participants.

Viewing locations and community access

Manheim, PA, Auto Auction and LCBC Church will continue to serve as primary viewing locations for spectators. Organizers noted that additional viewing areas will be announced closer to the event.

The revised routing is designed to allow the public to safely enjoy the convoy while limiting extended congestion on surrounding roadways.

Event organizers worked closely with local municipalities and transportation officials to finalize the updated plan.

From feeding families and supporting foster children to building homes and organizing blood drives, the effort added up to thousands of meals, hundreds of donations, and countless volunteer hours.

Fighting food insecurity year-round

Helping address hunger remained a consistent focus. In Rockford, Illinois, current and retired Landstar employees regularly volunteer at Carpenter’s Place, a nonprofit homeless day center. Every three months, the organization hosts a free community lunch, with Landstar employees handling fundraising and food preparation.

Those efforts helped serve more than 400 guests with hot meals in 2025.

At Landstar’s Jacksonville headquarters, employees once again partnered with Feeding Northeast Florida for the company’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. Coordinated by Debbie Templeton and Alexis Williams, the effort expanded significantly this year. Through employee donations and support, Feeding Northeast Florida was able to provide 22,998 additional meals and collect 743 pounds of food. Altogether, Landstar generated 23,618 meals for the organization.

Supporting children and families during the holidays

Community involvement increased as the holiday season approached. For 35 years, employees at Landstar’s Jacksonville headquarters have partnered with the Child Guidance Center, which provides support services for children and families.

In 2025, employees donated more than 120 new bicycles and helmets, which organizer Sid Sutphin helped deliver before the holidays. Employees also fulfilled Christmas wish lists for 125 children at the center by donating gifts and monetary support, with coordination assistance from Kristin McNaron.

In Rockford, employees supported the Winnebago Boone County Foster Care Alliance Adopt an Angel program. Thanks to coordinated efforts led by Lori Bauch, 55 Christmas wish lists for foster children were granted. Donations included toys, winter clothing, and other essential items to help children in the foster system during the colder months.

Investing in education and community health

Landstar employees also focused on needs beyond the holiday season. School supply drives in Jacksonville and Rockford collected hundreds of folders, notebooks, crayons, and backpacks for students at Holiday Hill Elementary in Jacksonville and Riverdahl Elementary in Rockford.

Ongoing blood drives at both locations made an impact as well. Donations are estimated to have provided enough blood to help save more than 300 lives, reinforcing the year-round value of employee participation.

Helping build stable housing

Housing stability became another area of focus in 2025. Landstar partnered with Habitat for Humanity, an organization dedicated to building and repairing homes for families in need.

Employees from the Rockford service center volunteered to help construct a new single-family home in their community. Twenty employees took time away from their regular duties to support the build, marking the first home completed through this partnership.

The program is expected to continue through 2026, with future builds planned at both the Jacksonville and Rockford locations.

Raising awareness through community events

In addition to hands-on volunteering, Landstar employees participated in several corporate runs to raise funds and awareness for important causes. These included Relay For Life events with the American Cancer Society in Jacksonville and the BKS Partners Corporate Run 5K, also held in Jacksonville.

ATG started Haulin’ 4 Hunger in 2012, and since then, the effort has delivered more than 98,000 meals. The mission keeps expanding, thanks to the hands and horsepower of ATG employees, customers, and business partners.

Fresh Turkey Meals Delivered in Convoy Style

On December 11, ATG crews will fire up two truck caravans loaded with 4,400 fresh turkey meals and all the holiday fixings. The deliveries will roll into eight community organizations throughout Worcester and nearby towns, including Boys and Girls Club of Worcester, Friendly House, Jeremiah’s Inn, Marlborough Community Cupboard, South Worcester Neighborhood Center, St. Anne’s Human Services, Veterans Inc., and Westborough Food Pantry. Drivers will hand off meals directly to each site, continuing a tradition many look forward to every year.

More Deliveries Through December

Between December 12 and 23, ATG will keep the wheels turning by sending thousands more meals to pantries near ATG dealerships across Southeastern and Western Massachusetts, along with locations in New Hampshire and Vermont. This round focuses on non-perishable items like canned chicken, stuffing, ramen, canned peas, and dessert packs. The donations will support Lancaster Food Pantry, LISTEN Food Pantry, Our Community Table, Our Place Drop-In Center, Our Daily Bread, and Seabrook Food Pantry. This quarter alone, the program will distribute more than 12,000 meals.

A Program That Keeps Growing

Now in its thirteenth year, Haulin’ 4 Hunger continues to widen its reach. ATG even launched its first fresh meal donation in New Hampshire this past June, delivering to a pantry near its Manchester location.

For the fifth year in a row, Lily Transportation partnered with the Salvation Army to ensure Veterans at the Jamaica Plain VA campus received full Thanksgiving meals. A week before the holiday, Lily prepared two large freezer trailers to keep everything stored and ready for distribution.

Mike Stanton, a veteran and Lily’s senior vice president of operations and compliance, worked with his team and other Veteran volunteers to organize the pickup, sorting, and delivery of the food on November 22nd.

“This program is a very special one for the Lily volunteers who have braved the elements for several years to ensure that our Veterans have a much deserved and enjoyable Thanksgiving meal,” Stanton said.

The program provided more than fourteen thousand dollars worth of Thanksgiving food, including more than three hundred twenty turkeys and hams, pies, carrots, onions, pans, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy mix, and other meal essentials. Everything was distributed to Veterans across Massachusetts.

Joseph Tocci, Supervisory Peer Specialist at Boston Health Care for Homeless Veterans, expressed appreciation for Lily’s continued involvement.

“Lily’s collaboration and volunteer support, many of whom are Veterans, played a crucial role in the event,” Tocci said. “The gratitude expressed by the Veterans was heartfelt and meaningful.”
